Where To Go on Weekend in Jakarta: Faunaland, Ancol

November 16, 2019

What do you think when you heard about Ancol? Maybe it will reminded you to a beach. But nowdays it is more than a beach. There are the themepark, the eco park, and also a small zoo, faunaland!

Me and my husband had been eager to bring our baby to a zoo. We wanted to show to her the real animal that she usually read on the book. Yet it is too far for us to go to Ragunan or Taman Safari. So we looked up something closer from our home and we found about Faunaland. We went there during Lebaran holiday last June. Oh yes, we're fasting when we went there. And because of that, we went there early in the morning. We were avoid the crowd and the sun.

We arrived around 8-ish AM and Faunaland just opened. They operate from 8 AM on the weekend. The fee on weekend is IDR 100.000/person and it's including riding the boat. But if you don't want to ride the boat, the fee is IDR 75.000/person. However, during weekdays the price is IDR 90.000/person for including the boat and IDR 65.000/person for the other.

What we can do in Faunaland:

  • Enjoying a bird show. We can see different types of bird during the show. The professional trainer will introduce the type of bird and calling out their name. Each bird will fly around above us and the trainer will feed them once done. No need to worry, the bird will not being forced to do something hard, like jumping or picking up something. They will just fly around us and the bird show is only for couple minutes. The show itself is only three or four times in each day. Even when we were there, two birds didn't response to the trainer when they called their name. The trainer still feed them and said it's okay to the bird and let the bird go back. And please make sure that our kids sit properly while watching the show, so the bird is not getting distracted.
  • Feeding the fish. There is a river inside that full of fish and we can feed them easily from the dock. We can buy the fish-food inside for IDR 5.000/bag. Please be aware, some people are selling it outside as well, but we have to keep it inside our bag. Because the security will throw it away if they see it.
  • Getting so close with the animal. Since it is a small version of zoo, the animal is not that complete. There is no bear or elephant. Yet they have some unique animal, such as the white kangoroo, donkey, etc. The kids can ride a pony if they want, but we have to pay for it.
  • Riding a boat. Faunaland is like a zoo in an island that surrounded by a river. We will get a life jacket to wear on if we afraid something goes wrong. It is a small boat and can only fit around 8-10 people (including kids). Please take a note that the boat is not always available to ride on. There is a time table about it and there is only three boats available. Even when we were there, there was only boat operated and it took ages for us waiting to ride.
Well in the end of the day, our baby was happy being there. She was a little bit afraid while watching the bird show, but still enthusiastic want to see the bird. Furthermore she was really happy feeding the fish. We bought three or four bags of fish-food! Lastly, now she knows how big is the sheep and what is a pony.

Here some tips going to Faunaland:

  • Come early as you can. It less crowd and not that hot.
  • Wear a comfortable shoes. Walking around in outdoor means need a proper shoes, which comfortable to wear. Really not recommended to wear a high heels.
  • Put a hat or bring umbrella. When the sun is getting up, it is getting hot over there. Not that hot, but still some areas better if we have an umbrella or hat.
  • Bring a pocket fan if you can't stand the heat.
  • Bring your stroller so your kids can rest and enjoy the site in the same time.
  • No proper meal being sold inside. They are only selling popmie, some snacks and some soft drinks.
Maybe I will consider come here again when our kid is bigger. And hopefully Faunaland can be an alternative option to spend some quality time for the reader with their kids.
