Road trip to the South of the North: Wellington

December 15, 2015

On the third day, we drove to the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington. We were going to return the car to the rental, meet another friend (which later became my boyfriend), and take the earliest ferry to South Island.

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand, but I feel it less crowded than Auckland. Indeed, there are a lot of shops, big buildings, and the transportation is more friendly than Auckland. But still, I prefer Auckland. The wind in Wellington is super duper not friendly. When I was there, I couldn't stand the wind, so freaking strong!

Perhaps, that is why they have the wind farm in Wellington, not in Auckland. The wind farm is located in Makara, west side of Wellington city. My suggestion if you want to go there, don't ever go there when the wind is madly strong. It will ruin everything, your clothes, your hair, and you are not able to have a proper picture. On the other hand, you can see all the generator was spinning rapidly. Other than that, I will suggest you to go when the sun is shining brightly and just a little wind.

Done with the wind farm, we moved to Mt. Victoria Summit. It is the place that you can see Wellington overall. It was nice to see how 'big' Wellington city from above, except the wind (which was a bit disturbing).

Long story short, we successfully returned the car and met our friend, who came along the way from Auckland to Wellington. We need one more guy because one of our friends had to return to Auckland because he had a class to attend. So, another friend came to meet us in Wellington. He would join us to Abel Tasman (in South Island and we're going there for the last destination of the road trip).

We were going to take the earliest ferry on the next day, so basically we didn't know where to go while waiting. We also didn't have that much time left before everything close (FYI, in New Zealand almost everything close around 5 PM). We decided to go to the biggest museum in New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of New Zealand. Unfortunately, the main area of the museum was already closed. But we could still have a look on the special exhibition. There were some special exhibitions on that time: celebrating of 75 years of Air New Zealand; The Great War Exhibition. Even though I couldn't go inside the museum, I still enjoyed the exhibitions. Such an excellent exhibition, especially The Great War.

It was around 6 PM when we're done wandering the exhibitions. We still had so much time left with nothing to do. But guess what, God loves us. One of my friends has a relative who lives in Wellington and she asked us to have dinner with her. We walked to the dinner place. It was a bit far from the museum. We basically finished wandering the city center. We had dinner and talked a lot. It was really killing time for us. We couldn't go check into the port, not until 11 PM. So we waited on the fast food restaurant until the time.

It was heavy rainy almost storm by the time we had to go to the port. We were terribly wet by the time we reached the port. We were super duper freaking tired, walking all the way dashing the rain. All of us were exhausted and by the time we could go the ferry, all of us had a good sleep.

Goodbye North Island, and hello South Island!
